A2: A Weekend with My Family
My family is not very big, but it is very friendly. I live with my parents and my younger brother, Kirill. My grandparents live in a village about fifty kilometres from our town.
My dad is a bus driver, and my mum works in a library. She reads more books than anyone I know. Kirill is seven, and he is the noisiest person in our flat.
Last Saturday we went to see my grandparents. Grandpa showed us his new greenhouse, and Grandma made her famous cabbage pie. In the evening we sat in the garden and played cards. Kirill lost every game, but he laughed the whole time.
Right now I am writing this text, and Mum is cooking dinner. Dad is helping Kirill with his homework.
Next summer we are going to spend two weeks in the village, because everyone needs a rest from the city.

B1: Three Generations under One Roof
In many Russian families, grandparents play an important role in bringing up children. My family is a good example: my parents, my grandmother and I have lived in the same flat in Yekaterinburg since I was born, and I can't imagine our home without her.
My parents both work long hours, so when I was little, it was Grandma who took me to kindergarten, taught me to read and listened to my endless questions. She is the person who knows all our family stories, and she has kept dozens of old photo albums which we sometimes look through together on winter evenings.
Of course, living together is not always easy. My grandmother, who grew up without television or the internet, often says that we spend too much time looking at screens. However, we have learnt to respect each other's habits. I helped her set up video calls so that she can talk to her sister in Omsk, and she taught me how to make real Siberian pelmeni.
Every family has its own traditions. Ours is Sunday lunch, which is cooked by everyone together. Nobody is allowed to use a phone at the table.
Although I sometimes want more privacy, I know that if I move to another city to study, I will miss these noisy Sunday lunches a lot.

B2: What Makes a Family Strong?
It is often said that you can choose your friends but not your family. While that is true, I have come to believe that the strength of a family depends far less on blood ties than on the everyday choices its members make.
Families today look very different from those of a century ago. Relatives are frequently scattered across several cities or even countries, and many children grow up with one parent or with step-brothers and step-sisters. Some people see this as a sign that the family is in decline. Personally, I find that view too pessimistic. Having watched my parents divorce when I was nine and later build two new, happy households, I know that a family can change shape without losing its warmth.
What, then, holds people together? In my experience, it is mostly small things: a phone call to check how an exam went, a shared joke that nobody outside the family would understand, a willingness to forgive. Had my older cousin not stayed with me during the difficult months after the divorce, I would probably have felt far more alone than I did.
Communication matters too. Arguments are inevitable whenever several personalities share one space, yet families that talk openly about their disagreements tend to come out of them stronger. Hiding resentment, by contrast, slowly poisons even the closest relationships.
Finally, a strong family gives its members room to grow. Parents who respect a teenager's need for independence usually receive more trust in return than those who try to control every decision.
In short, a family is not something you simply have; it is something you keep creating, day after day.
