A2: A Day with Dad
My dad is an engineer at a factory, so he usually works long hours. But last Saturday he took a day off, and we spent the whole day together.
In the morning we went to the river. Dad taught me how to put a worm on the hook. It was not easy, and I was a bit scared, but I didn't give up. In the end I caught a small fish! Dad was prouder than me.
Then we went home and fixed my old bike. My dad is better at repairing things than anyone I know. He showed me how to change a tyre, and now I can do it myself.
In the evening we watched a film about space and ate pizza. It was the best Saturday of the year.
Right now Dad is working on a new project, but he has promised a trip to the forest next month. We are going to sleep in a tent!

B1: What My Dad Has Taught Me
My dad, Andrey, is a paramedic, which means he spends his working days in an ambulance, helping people who are in danger. He has done this job for almost twenty years, and although it is often stressful, he says he cannot imagine doing anything else.
Because of his shifts, Dad is not always at home for dinner or at my school concerts. When I was younger, this used to upset me. However, I have realised that his work is important, and the time we spend together has become even more valuable to me.
Dad is a calm and patient person. He rarely raises his voice, even when I have done something stupid. Instead, he asks questions until I understand my mistake myself. He has also taught me first aid, so I know what to do if someone faints or cuts their hand badly.
Outside work, Dad is surprisingly creative. He plays the guitar, and on long winter evenings he sings old songs which my grandparents used to love.
I have not decided what I want to be yet. But if I choose a career in medicine, it will certainly be because of my dad's example.

B2: The Changing Role of Fathers
When my grandfather was young, a father's role seemed fairly clear. He was expected to earn money, make important decisions and occasionally discipline the children, while almost everything to do with their daily care was left to the mother. My grandfather once admitted that he had never changed a nappy or attended a single parents' meeting at school.
My own dad belongs to a different generation. Having grown up with a rather distant father, he decided early on that he wanted to be closely involved in his children's lives. He takes me to the dentist, knows the names of my friends and is far better than my mum at helping me with physics homework.
This shift is visible far beyond our family. Increasingly, fathers can be seen pushing prams in the park, picking children up from kindergarten or taking parental leave. Sociologists suggest that children benefit enormously from such involvement, which is linked to greater self-confidence and better results at school.
Not everyone, of course, welcomes the change. Some people argue that traditional roles provided stability and that modern fathers risk becoming 'second mothers' rather than authority figures. I understand the concern, but I believe it is based on a false choice. A father can be both caring and firm, both a friend and a guide.
Were it not for my dad's willingness to listen, I would probably have kept many of my problems to myself during some difficult teenage years. That is why, in my view, the most valuable thing a father can give is not money or strict rules, but his time and attention.
