My name is Kirill, and I am fourteen. Two years ago I started learning Chinese, because I wanted to try something really different. My friends thought I was crazy!

At first it was very difficult. Chinese has four tones, so one word can have four different meanings. For example, 'ma' can mean 'mother' or 'horse'. Writing characters was even harder than speaking.

My teacher, Mr Li, comes from Shanghai. He often tells us about Chinese traditions. Last February he invited our group to celebrate Chinese New Year. We ate dumplings, watched a dragon dance online and got red envelopes with chocolate coins inside.

Now I can read simple texts and write about two hundred characters. I am not the best student in the group, but I am getting better every week.

Next summer I am going to visit Beijing with my teacher's group. I want to see the Forbidden City and climb the Great Wall.

B1: An Ancient Civilisation

China is one of the oldest civilisations in the world, with a written history that goes back more than three thousand years. It is also one of the largest countries on Earth, stretching from the Himalayas in the west to the Pacific coast in the east. The two great rivers, the Yellow River and the Yangtze, have been the centres of Chinese life for thousands of years.

Many things we use every day were first invented in China. Paper, printing, the compass and gunpowder are often called the Four Great Inventions. Silk, which was produced in China long before anywhere else, was so valuable that the trade routes to Europe became known as the Silk Road.

The Great Wall is probably the most famous symbol of the country. It was built and rebuilt over many centuries to protect the empire from northern tribes. Although people often say that it can be seen from space, this is actually a myth.

Chinese culture has also given the world the ideas of Confucius, a philosopher who taught that respect for family and education are the basis of a good society. These values are still important in China today.

I have tried Chinese food many times, but I have never eaten real Peking duck in Beijing. If I get the chance, I will definitely try it.

B2: Between Past and Future

Few countries combine the ancient and the ultra-modern as strikingly as China. In a single afternoon in Shanghai, one can wander through a classical garden laid out several centuries ago and then take a high-speed lift to the top of a skyscraper that seems to belong to a science-fiction film.

This contrast is the result of one of the fastest transformations in human history. Within a few decades, China turned from a largely rural society into the world's leading manufacturer, and hundreds of millions of people moved from villages to rapidly growing cities. Such a change, however impressive, has come at a price: traditional neighbourhoods have disappeared, and air pollution has become a serious problem in many regions.

Yet it would be a mistake to think that modern China has abandoned its past. Families still gather for the Spring Festival, creating the largest annual migration on the planet, and calligraphy is still taught as an art that demands patience and discipline. Even the language itself connects people to history: a well-educated reader can recognise many characters used more than two thousand years ago.

For foreigners, China can be difficult to understand, not least because its writing system makes it hard to read even simple signs. However, those who make the effort to learn a little Chinese are usually rewarded with remarkable warmth and curiosity from local people.

In my view, China cannot be summed up in a few words. Had I visited only its modern cities, I would have seen a country racing into the future; it was only in the quiet villages of Yunnan that I realised how deeply its roots go.
