A2: My Trip to Japan
Last April I went to Japan with my parents. It was the longest flight of my life, but I wasn't bored because I was reading a book about Japanese history.
We stayed in Tokyo for five days. Tokyo is bigger and busier than Moscow, but it is very clean and quiet. People speak softly on trains, and nobody leaves rubbish in the streets.
Then we took the shinkansen, a very fast train, to Kyoto. Kyoto was the capital of Japan for more than a thousand years. We saw old temples, beautiful gardens and women in kimonos.
The cherry trees were in blossom, so the parks were full of people. Families were sitting under the trees and having picnics. This tradition is called hanami.
My favourite thing was the food. I tried ramen, sushi and green tea ice cream. Next time I am going to climb Mount Fuji.

B1: Japan: Old and New
Japan is a chain of islands in the Pacific Ocean, east of mainland Asia. Four main islands, Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu, make up most of its territory. Because the country lies in an area where earthquakes are common, Japanese buildings are designed to survive strong shaking, and children practise what to do in an emergency at school.
Japan is a country where the past and the future live side by side. In Kyoto you can visit wooden temples which were built many centuries ago, while in Tokyo you can ride on a fully automatic train or eat in a café where robots bring you your order.
Japanese culture has become popular all over the world. Anime and manga have millions of fans, and words such as karaoke, emoji and tsunami have entered many languages. Japanese companies have also given us famous cars, cameras and video game consoles.
Daily life in Japan is shaped by politeness and respect. People bow when they greet each other, take off their shoes before entering a home and rarely talk loudly in public. However, visitors are not expected to know every rule, and mistakes are usually forgiven with a smile.
I have watched a lot of anime, but I have never seen Japan with my own eyes. If I learn some Japanese, I will feel more confident when I finally go there.

B2: What Japan Can Teach Us
Few countries have managed to combine ancient traditions and cutting-edge technology as successfully as Japan. Having spent more than two centuries almost completely closed to foreigners, the country opened up in the second half of the nineteenth century and transformed itself with astonishing speed into a modern industrial power.
What strikes many visitors first is not the skyscrapers or the high-speed trains but the sense of order. Trains depart to the second, streets are spotless despite the lack of public bins, and lost wallets are frequently returned to their owners with nothing missing. Such behaviour is rooted in a strong sense of responsibility towards the community rather than in strict rules alone.
Japanese aesthetics offer another valuable lesson. The idea of wabi-sabi suggests that beauty lies in simplicity and imperfection: a cracked tea bowl repaired with gold is considered more precious, not less. Similarly, the art of the tea ceremony teaches people to slow down and pay full attention to a single moment.
Of course, Japanese society faces serious challenges. The population is ageing rapidly, and long working hours have long been a subject of public debate. Many young people, moreover, feel enormous pressure to do well in exams. Not every aspect of Japanese life, therefore, should be idealised or copied without thinking.
Nevertheless, I believe that other countries could learn a great deal from Japan. If more cities treated public spaces as shared homes, they would be cleaner and calmer places to live. And had I not read about wabi-sabi, I might still be throwing away things simply because they are no longer perfect.
