A2: My Trip to London
Last summer I went to London with my English class. We stayed there for five days, and it was the most exciting trip of my life.
On the first day we took a boat along the Thames. We saw the Tower of London, which is older than most buildings in the city, and we walked across Tower Bridge. In the evening we went on the London Eye. The view from the top was amazing!
The next day we visited the British Museum. It is free, and it is one of the biggest museums in the world. I liked the Egyptian mummies most of all.
The weather was cloudy and it often rained, but we didn't mind. We ate fish and chips and rode on a red double-decker bus.
I want to go back one day, because I didn't see everything. Next time I am going to visit Hyde Park and the Science Museum.

B1: London Through the Centuries
London has existed for almost two thousand years. It was founded by the Romans, who called it Londinium and built a bridge across the Thames. Since then the city has grown from a small trading settlement into one of the largest cities in Europe, with a population of more than eight million people.
The city has survived several disasters. In 1666 the Great Fire of London destroyed thousands of houses and the old St Paul's Cathedral. However, the tragedy also gave the architect Christopher Wren the chance to rebuild many churches, including the new St Paul's, whose famous dome still rises above the City today.
Modern London is a place where history and the present day sit side by side. Next to medieval churches you can find glass skyscrapers such as the Shard, and the Underground, which was opened in 1863, is the oldest underground railway in the world.
London is also extremely multicultural. People from all over the world have made it their home, so you can hear hundreds of languages on its streets and try food from almost every country.
I have read a lot about London, but I have never been there. If I get the chance, I will definitely spend a whole day in the National Gallery.

B2: Two Faces of London
Few cities have been described as often as London. Writers from Charles Dickens to Arthur Conan Doyle have turned its foggy streets into a setting known to readers all over the world, and many visitors arrive expecting to find the London of novels and films. What they actually discover is far more complex.
On the one hand, London is a city of tradition. The Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, the ravens of the Tower and the black cabs that still navigate its maze of narrow streets all create an impression of continuity. Walking through Westminster, one can easily imagine that little has changed in centuries.
On the other hand, London is constantly reinventing itself. Former docks in the east have been transformed into a business district full of skyscrapers, and abandoned factories have become galleries, the most famous being Tate Modern, housed in a former power station on the south bank of the Thames. Markets such as Camden, originally serving local residents, now attract visitors with street food from every corner of the globe.
This constant change is not without its drawbacks. Many Londoners complain that the cost of living has pushed ordinary families out of the centre and that some historic neighbourhoods are losing their character. Rarely does a conversation with a local end without a remark about rent or crowded trains.
Personally, I find this tension between old and new the most fascinating thing about the city. Had London simply preserved itself as a museum, it would have become a beautiful but lifeless place. Instead, it remains a living city, imperfect and ever-changing, which is precisely why people keep coming back to it.
