A2: My Trip to Britain
Last summer I went to the United Kingdom with my parents. It was my first trip abroad, and I was very excited.
We spent four days in London. We saw Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London and Big Ben, and we travelled on a red double-decker bus. The London Underground is the oldest in the world, and it was very crowded!
Then we took a train to Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. It is smaller than London, but I liked it more because of its old castle and narrow streets. In the street I saw a man who was playing the bagpipes.
The weather was changing all the time: sunny in the morning, rainy in the afternoon.
Next time we are going to visit Wales and Northern Ireland, the other two parts of the country.

B1: Four Nations, One Kingdom
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is made up of four nations: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is the name of the largest island, which includes England, Scotland and Wales, while Northern Ireland is located in the north-east of the island of Ireland.
Each nation has its own capital and its own character. London, the capital of England and of the whole country, is one of the largest cities in Europe. Edinburgh, the Scottish capital, is famous for its summer festival, Cardiff is the capital of Wales, and Belfast, where the Titanic was built, is the capital of Northern Ireland.
Although English is spoken everywhere, it is not the only language. In Wales many people speak Welsh, and road signs are written in both languages. Gaelic can still be heard in parts of Scotland.
Britain has given the world many things which are now part of everyday life, from the steam railway to modern football and the plays of William Shakespeare.
I have read a lot about Britain, but I have never been there. If I go one day, I will start with the Scottish Highlands rather than London.

B2: Beyond the Stereotypes
Few countries are surrounded by as many stereotypes as the United Kingdom. Ask a group of foreign students to describe the British, and you will probably hear about endless rain, afternoon tea, queues and a reluctance to show emotion. Like most clichés, these contain a grain of truth, yet they conceal a far more complex picture.
Take the weather. It is true that it changes constantly, which may explain why the British talk about it so much. Nevertheless, London receives less rain per year than Rome, a fact that surprises almost everyone. What makes British weather memorable is not the amount of rain but its unpredictability: a bright morning can easily turn into a stormy afternoon.
Equally misleading is the idea of a single British culture. The four nations that make up the kingdom have distinct histories, accents and, in the case of Wales and Scotland, languages of their own. Each also has its own national symbols, from the Welsh dragon to the Scottish thistle. Calling a Scot 'English' is a mistake that few visitors make twice.
As for reserve, it is perhaps better understood as a form of politeness. Understatement, irony and an instinctive dislike of making a fuss are deeply rooted in everyday communication. Describing a disaster as 'not ideal' is not a sign of coldness; it is a way of coping with difficulties without drama.
Having spent a month with a host family in York, I would say that the real Britain lies somewhere between the clichés and their opposites. Had I relied only on textbooks, I would never have discovered how warm, eccentric and self-mocking its people can be.
