A2: My Trip to Germany

Last autumn I went to Germany with my school class. We were studying German, and our teacher wanted us to practise the language in real life.

First we visited Berlin. We saw the Brandenburg Gate and walked along a part of the old Berlin Wall. Berlin is smaller than Moscow, and it is much quieter, and many people ride bikes.

Then we took a train to Munich. German trains are fast and comfortable, but sometimes they are late! In Munich we ate pretzels and white sausages, and we visited a huge science museum.

The most beautiful place was Neuschwanstein Castle in the mountains. It looks like a castle from a Disney cartoon.

Now I am working hard on my German, because next year I am going to take part in a student exchange.

B1: Germany at a Glance

Germany lies in the heart of Europe and shares its borders with nine countries. It is home to more than 80 million people, which makes it the most populous country in the European Union. The country is a federal republic made up of sixteen states, each of which has its own government.

Germany has not always been a single country. For centuries it was divided into many small kingdoms and duchies, and it was only united in 1871. After the Second World War it was split again, and the Berlin Wall, which divided the capital, fell in 1989. A year later Germany was reunited.

The country is famous for its contribution to culture and science. Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe were all German, and the first modern car was built here by Carl Benz in 1886.

Germans are often described as punctual and well organised, although many of them would say this is just a stereotype. What is certainly true is that they take recycling seriously: rubbish is sorted into several different bins.

I have read a lot about Germany, but I have never been there. If I pass my German exam, my parents will take me to Hamburg.

B2: Beyond the Stereotypes

Ask people what they associate with Germany and you are likely to hear the same few answers: beer, cars, football and a passion for order. While none of these is entirely wrong, such a list says very little about a country whose identity has been shaped by division, reinvention and an unusually honest relationship with its own past.

Unlike France or Britain, Germany did not become a nation state until 1871, and regional loyalties remain strong to this day. A Bavarian and a Hamburger may speak noticeably different dialects, eat different food and even celebrate different holidays. This diversity is reflected in the federal system, which gives the sixteen states considerable control over education and culture.

Perhaps the most striking feature of modern Germany is the way it remembers history. Having experienced the catastrophe of the Second World War, Germans have made remembrance a part of everyday life: memorials stand in the centre of cities, and schoolchildren study the darkest chapters of the twentieth century in detail. Many historians see this openness as one of the reasons why the country rebuilt trust with its neighbours.

The reunification of 1990 brought its own challenges. Joining two societies that had developed separately for forty years proved far harder than many had expected, and differences between east and west can still be felt.

In my opinion, Germany is best understood not through its clichés but through its contradictions. Had I judged it only by the stereotypes, I would never have discovered how relaxed Berlin can feel on a summer evening, or how passionately ordinary Germans debate their own history.
