A2: New Year on the Beach
Last December my family flew to Australia to visit my aunt. The flight was very long, more than twenty hours, but it was worth it.
It was summer there! While my friends in Moscow were playing in the snow, I was swimming in the ocean. We celebrated New Year on the beach, and it was the strangest New Year of my life.
In Sydney we saw the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. Then we visited a wildlife park, where I fed a kangaroo and took a photo with a koala. The koala looked sleepier than my cat!
Australians were very friendly. They often said 'G'day' instead of 'hello' and called everyone 'mate'.
My aunt wants to show us the Great Barrier Reef, so we are going to go back in two years.

B1: A Continent of Its Own
Australia is the only country in the world which covers a whole continent. It is the sixth largest country by area, but most of its land is desert or dry bush, known as the outback. That is why most Australians live on the coast, especially in the south-east.
The first people came to Australia at least fifty thousand years ago. Aboriginal Australians have one of the oldest continuous cultures on Earth, and their rock paintings and stories have been passed down through countless generations. Europeans arrived much later: the first British settlement was founded in 1788, near today's Sydney.
Because Australia was separated from other continents for millions of years, many of its animals cannot be found anywhere else. Kangaroos, koalas, wombats and the strange platypus, which lays eggs although it is a mammal, all live there.
Off the north-east coast lies the Great Barrier Reef, the largest coral reef system in the world. However, rising ocean temperatures have damaged large parts of it.
I have never been to Australia, but I have watched many documentaries about it. If I get the chance, I will travel across the outback by train and see the red desert with my own eyes.

B2: Beyond the Postcard
To many people in the northern hemisphere, Australia conjures up images of golden beaches, surfers and endless sunshine. While these images are not false, they capture only a fraction of a country whose landscapes and history are far more complex than any postcard suggests.
Living on the driest inhabited continent has always demanded resourcefulness. Aboriginal peoples, who have lived on the land for tens of thousands of years, developed a profound knowledge of its plants, seasons and water sources, and used controlled burning to manage the bush. Only recently has modern Australia begun to recognise how much this traditional knowledge could contribute to protecting the environment.
Nature here is both breathtaking and unforgiving. Droughts, floods and bushfires are a regular part of life, and the country's unique wildlife is extraordinarily vulnerable. Rabbits and foxes, brought by European settlers, spread across the continent with devastating consequences for native species; had their impact been foreseen, they might never have been introduced.
At the same time, Australia is remarkably multicultural. A large proportion of its population was born overseas, and cities such as Melbourne and Sydney owe much of their energy to the mixture of cultures, cuisines and languages found on their streets.
In my view, Australia is best understood not as a paradise but as an ongoing experiment in coexistence: between people and a harsh environment, between ancient and modern cultures, and between communities from every corner of the globe. Were I to visit, I would want to see not only the Opera House but also the red heart of the continent, where that experiment is most visible.
