A2: Visiting My Aunt in Canada

My aunt Olga moved to Canada ten years ago. She lives in Vancouver, a big city on the Pacific coast. Last summer my mum and I flew there to visit her.

Vancouver is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever seen. There are mountains on one side and the ocean on the other. It rains a lot there, but the weather in summer was warm and sunny.

One day we went to Stanley Park, which is bigger than many towns. We rode bikes, saw raccoons and watched seaplanes landing on the water.

Then we travelled to the Rocky Mountains. The lakes there were bright blue, and we saw a black bear near the road! My aunt told us to stay in the car because bears can be dangerous.

Canadians were very polite and friendly. Next year my aunt is going to visit us in Russia.

B1: Canada: Land of Lakes and Forests

Canada is the second largest country in the world after Russia, and the two countries have a lot in common: huge northern territories, long cold winters and endless forests. Canada also has more lakes than any other country, and its coastline, which touches three oceans, is the longest on Earth.

However, most Canadians live in a narrow strip of land close to the border with the United States, where the climate is milder. Large parts of the north are almost empty, and in some remote communities the only way to travel in winter is by plane or by snowmobile.

Canada has two official languages, English and French. French is spoken mainly in the province of Quebec, where cities like Montreal and Quebec City feel surprisingly European. Canada is also known for welcoming immigrants, and people from all over the world have made it their home.

Canadians are famous for their love of ice hockey, which is often called the national winter sport. Another symbol of the country is maple syrup, which is made from the sap of maple trees and is eaten with pancakes.

I have read a lot about Canada, and I would love to see the northern lights there one day. If I go, I will definitely visit Quebec too, because I have been learning French for two years.

B2: What Makes Canada Canadian?

Defining the national character of any country is a risky business, but in Canada's case it is especially tricky. Living next to a much more powerful and populous neighbour, Canadians have often defined themselves by what they are not, and many will politely but firmly remind you that they are not Americans.

One trait that visitors notice almost immediately is politeness. Canadians are said to apologise so often that the word 'sorry' has become a national joke. Behind the stereotype, however, lies something more meaningful: a widely shared belief that public life should be based on compromise and mutual respect rather than confrontation.

This attitude is closely linked to the country's diversity. Canada became officially bilingual in 1969, and two years later it became one of the first countries to adopt multiculturalism as an official policy. Instead of expecting newcomers to abandon their traditions, the idea encourages them to preserve their heritage while sharing common civic values. As a result, cities like Toronto are among the most culturally diverse in the world.

Of course, Canada is far from perfect. The country's treatment of its Indigenous peoples has long been a painful subject, and acknowledging past injustices remains an important task. Nevertheless, the willingness to discuss such issues openly is itself a sign of a mature society.

For me, the most attractive feature of Canada is the balance it strikes between wild nature and urban life. Were I to live there, I would choose a city within easy reach of the mountains, so that I could spend weekends hiking in silence and weekdays among people from every corner of the globe.
