A2: A Day Off for Mum

My mum's name is Irina. She teaches English at a school in our town, and her pupils love her lessons. She is patient and calm, but she can be strict when it is necessary.

Mum is always busy. In the morning she makes breakfast for everybody, and then she goes to work. In the evening she checks our homework and cooks dinner. I think she is the busiest person in our family.

Last year, on the eighth of March, my dad and I decided to give her a real day off. We got up early, made pancakes and cleaned the whole flat. My little sister drew a card with flowers. When Mum woke up, she was very surprised and happy.

Next year I am going to cook dinner for her myself, because she deserves it.

B1: What My Mother Has Taught Me

My mother, Natalia, works as a nurse in the children's ward of a large hospital. Her job is demanding: she often works night shifts and has to stay calm in situations which would frighten most people. However, she never complains, and when she comes home, she always asks how my day was.

Mum grew up in a village in the Ryazan region, where she learnt to do almost everything herself. She can grow vegetables, sew a dress and fix a dripping tap, although she says she has never been good at maths.

Over the years she has taught me a lot. Thanks to her, I can cook simple meals, and I have learnt to look after my younger brother when she is at work. Most importantly, she has shown me that kindness is not a weakness.

Of course, we do not always agree. We argue about how much time I spend on my phone, and she thinks my music is far too loud. Still, I know that she is the person who will always support me.

If I become a doctor one day, it will be partly because of her example.

B2: The Invisible Work of Mothers

When people are asked who has influenced them most, a remarkable number name their mother. This is hardly surprising, yet it is worth asking why the role of mothers is so often taken for granted, praised once a year with flowers and cards and then quietly forgotten.

Much of what a mother does is invisible. Remembering every dentist appointment, noticing that a child is upset before a word has been said, keeping a household running smoothly: none of this appears in any job description, and none of it is paid. Only when it stops being done does anyone realise how much effort it required.

My own mother combined a full-time job as an engineer with raising three children. Looking back, I am amazed that she found the energy not only to feed and clothe us but also to listen to our endless stories about school. Had she not insisted on family dinners, our household would have been little more than a group of people sharing a flat. We grumbled about those dinners at the time, but now they are among my warmest memories.

Of course, mothers are not saints, and idealising them can be as unfair as ignoring them. Like anyone else, they make mistakes, lose their temper and have dreams of their own that have nothing to do with their children. Recognising this does not make them less important; it simply makes our relationship with them more honest.

Perhaps the best way to show gratitude, then, is not through grand gestures once a year but through everyday recognition: sharing the household chores, asking about her day, and remembering that she is a person in her own right.
