A2: How I Started Playing Basketball
When I was nine, I was the shortest boy in my class, and I didn't like PE lessons at all. Then one day our PE teacher asked me to try basketball. I was surprised, but I said yes.
At first it was very hard. The other players were taller and faster than me, and I often lost the ball. But my coach said, 'Speed is more important than height.' I trained three times a week and practised at home every evening.
Now I am fourteen, and I am one of the best players in our school team. Last month we won the town championship. It was the happiest day of my life!
Basketball has taught me a lot. I am stronger now, and I have got many new friends. This summer I am going to a sports camp, because I want to become even better.

B1: Why I Have Never Given Up Running
I started running three years ago, when a doctor told me that I needed more exercise. At first I could hardly run for five minutes without stopping. However, I set myself a simple goal: to run a little further every week. Since then I have taken part in several school races and even a ten-kilometre run in my city.
Running is a sport which almost anyone can do. You do not need expensive equipment or a special place, just a good pair of trainers. I usually run in the park near my house early in the morning, when the paths are quiet and the air is fresh.
Regular training has changed my life in many ways. I sleep better, I feel less stressed before exams, and I have met people who share my interest. Our local running club organises group runs on Sundays, where beginners are always welcome.
Of course, there are days when I do not want to get out of bed, especially in November, when it is dark and wet. Although it is tempting to stay at home, I always remind myself how good I feel after a run.
My next goal is a half marathon. If I keep training regularly, I will be ready for it by next autumn.

B2: Sport: More Than Winning
Whenever sport is discussed on television, the conversation tends to revolve around medals, records and famous champions. It is easy to forget that for the vast majority of people sport has nothing to do with professional success. It is a way of keeping healthy, spending time with friends and, perhaps most importantly, learning how to cope with failure.
I realised this when I joined a volleyball team at the age of twelve. Our team lost almost every match in the first season, and I remember coming home in tears more than once. Looking back, however, I can see that those defeats taught me far more than any victory could have. I learnt to analyse my mistakes, to support teammates who were having a bad day and to keep going when the result seemed hopeless.
Critics sometimes argue that school sport puts too much pressure on children and turns games into stressful competitions. There is some truth in this: not every child enjoys being judged on the pitch, and a coach who cares only about winning can easily discourage a beginner. Nevertheless, I believe the solution is not to remove competition altogether but to change the way it is presented, so that effort and progress are valued as much as the final score.
Never before has it been so easy to stay physically inactive. Many teenagers spend hours sitting in front of screens, and doctors warn about the consequences for both physical and mental health. Seen in this light, regular exercise is no longer a hobby for a few enthusiasts but a necessity for everyone.
If I had given up volleyball after that first disappointing season, I would have missed out on some of the best friendships of my life. That, to me, is the real value of sport.
