My name is Artem. I am eleven. My favourite sport is football.

Football is a team game. There are eleven players in a team. Players kick the ball and try to score goals.

I play football with my friends after school. We play in the school yard. I am a good goalkeeper.

On Saturdays I go to a football club. My coach is very kind. We train for two hours.

I like watching football on TV too. Football is fun!

I have played football since I was six. Now I play for my school team, and I am a midfielder. Our team is not the strongest in the city, but we are very friendly and we never give up.

Last May we played in the final of the school championship. The other team was taller and faster than us, and they scored in the first ten minutes. We were very upset.

At half-time our coach said, 'Don't be afraid of them. Play together and pass the ball.' In the second half we were playing much better. My friend Kostya scored, and the score was one all.

Five minutes before the end, I got the ball near the goal. I kicked it as hard as I could, and it flew into the net! We won two one.

It was the best day of my football life. Next season we are going to play in the city league.

Football is often called the most popular sport on the planet. It is played in almost every country, and the World Cup final is watched by hundreds of millions of people. One reason for its popularity is simplicity: all you need is a ball and some open space, and two jumpers on the ground can serve as goalposts.

People played games with a ball in many ancient cultures, but modern football was born in England. In 1863 a group of clubs met in a London pub and agreed on a common set of rules. This organisation, which is still called the Football Association, is the oldest of its kind in the world.

The first World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930, and the hosts became the first champions. Since then, the tournament has taken place every four years, except during the Second World War. Brazil has won it more times than any other country.

Football has also changed a lot in recent years. Video technology now helps referees to make fairer decisions, although many fans complain that it slows the game down. Women's football has become much more popular too.

I have supported the same club since I was a child. Even when my team loses, I don't stop watching. If you have never been to a stadium, go at least once: the atmosphere is unforgettable.

It has often been said that football is 'the beautiful game', and for billions of people this is hardly an exaggeration. Yet its enormous appeal cannot be explained by beauty alone. What sets football apart from most other sports is its unpredictability: since goals are rare, a single moment of brilliance or a single mistake can decide a match, and an underdog occasionally beats a team of famous stars.

For many fans, supporting a club is less a hobby than part of their identity. Loyalty is often passed down from parents to children, and people remain faithful to a team for decades, regardless of its results. Matches between local rivals can divide whole cities, while international tournaments give entire nations a rare sense of unity.

Football also offers a path to success for talented young people from poor backgrounds. Many of the greatest players in history grew up kicking a ball in narrow streets, and their careers inspire millions of children to believe that hard work can change their lives.

Nevertheless, the modern game has its darker side. Enormous sums of money, constant advertising and ticket prices that ordinary supporters can barely afford have led some critics to claim that football is turning into a business rather than a sport. Outbursts of violence among fans, though less common than they once were, remain a serious problem as well.

In my view, these problems are real but not fatal. If clubs listened more to their supporters and invested more in youth teams, football would keep both its soul and its popularity. Had I not joined a local club as a child, I would never have understood how much teamwork and friendship this simple game can teach.
