A2: My First Dance Competition

Last spring I took part in my first dance competition. I was very nervous because there were more than fifty dancers from different cities.

My group did a modern dance. We practised for three months, and we were going to show a story about friendship. Our costumes were blue and silver, and they were brighter than the costumes of the other teams.

Before the show I couldn't eat anything. But when the music started, I forgot about my fear. It was the most exciting moment of my life!

We didn't win first place, but we got a prize for the best costumes. Our teacher was very proud of us.

Now I am practising harder than before. Next year we are going to take part in the competition again, and I hope we will dance even better.

B1: Dances of the World

Dancing is one of the oldest forms of art. People have danced for thousands of years: at weddings, at festivals and simply to express their feelings. Today there are hundreds of styles, and each of them tells us something about the culture where it was born.

Classical ballet, which first appeared in Italy and France, became especially famous in Russia. The Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow and the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg are known all over the world. Latin American dances, such as the salsa and the tango, are full of passion, while Irish dancers keep their arms still and move only their feet.

Hip-hop dance appeared in New York in the 1970s. At first it was danced on the streets, but now it is taught in schools and studios in almost every city.

Dancing is also great for your health. It makes your heart stronger, improves your balance and helps you to relax. However, it is not always easy: dancers often repeat one movement hundreds of times before it looks perfect.

I have done hip-hop for two years, and recently I have also tried contemporary dance. If you choose a style that you really enjoy, you will never get bored.

B2: Why Everyone Should Dance

Few activities are as universal as dancing. Every known culture has some form of it, from the ritual dances of ancient tribes to the carefully choreographed performances on the stages of the world's great theatres. Dance is, in a sense, a language that needs no translation.

Many people, however, regard dancing as something reserved for the talented few. Convinced that they have 'two left feet', they stand awkwardly at the edge of the dance floor, afraid of looking ridiculous. This attitude, in my opinion, deprives them of one of the simplest pleasures available to human beings.

The benefits of dancing are well documented. Physically, it improves coordination, flexibility and stamina without feeling like a tedious workout. Mentally, it demands concentration and memory, since learning a sequence of steps trains the brain as much as the body. Studies have even suggested that regular dancing may lower the risk of memory problems in old age.

Perhaps the most underrated advantage, though, is social. Partner dances such as the waltz or the tango require trust and constant non-verbal communication. Group classes bring together people of different ages and backgrounds who might otherwise never have met. Not only does dancing make people fitter, but it also makes them less lonely.

I speak from experience. Had my parents not persuaded me to attend a ballroom class at the age of ten, I would probably have remained a shy child who avoided any kind of attention. Having spent years on the dance floor, I have learnt that confidence is not something you are born with but something you practise.

So if you have ever hesitated, take the first step. Nobody expects perfection from a beginner, and the only real mistake is never to try.
