A2: My Trip to Saint Petersburg

Last summer I went to Saint Petersburg with my parents. We travelled there by a fast train called Sapsan. The journey took only four hours, and I spent most of the time looking out of the window.

Saint Petersburg was more beautiful than I expected. We walked along Nevsky Prospect, visited the Hermitage and took a boat trip on the canals. The Hermitage was the most interesting place, but it was very big, and my legs were tired after three hours.

One night we watched the bridges open over the Neva. It was very late, but there were a lot of people on the embankment.

I bought some postcards and a magnet for my friends. The weather was often rainy, but we didn't care.

Next summer we are going to visit Kazan. I am already reading about it!

B1: Why People Travel

People travel for many different reasons. Some want to relax on a beach, others want to see famous sights, and some simply want to escape from their everyday routine. Whatever the reason, travelling has become much easier than it was a hundred years ago.

There are many ways to travel. Planes are the fastest, so they are the best choice for long distances. Trains are slower, but they are comfortable, and you can enjoy the view from the window. Travelling by car gives you freedom, although long journeys can be tiring.

Many young people prefer independent travel to package holidays. They book cheap hostels, plan their own routes and try local food in small cafés, which are usually cheaper than restaurants for tourists.

Travelling teaches us a lot. When you visit a place where people speak a different language, you learn to be patient and open-minded. You also start to see your own country in a new way.

I have been to five countries so far, and the trip I remember best is a hiking holiday in the Caucasus. If I pass my exams, my friends and I will go to Lake Baikal next summer.

B2: The Real Value of Travel

It has never been easier to travel. Cheap flights, online booking and translation apps have turned journeys that once required months of planning into weekend trips. Yet the ease of modern travel raises a question worth asking: are we really learning more about the world, or simply collecting photographs of it?

Much of today's tourism follows a predictable pattern. Visitors queue for the same famous views, take the same pictures and post them online within minutes, often spending more time looking at their screens than at the places around them. Seen in this light, travel risks becoming a kind of consumption, no different from buying a new phone.

This is not, however, the whole picture. Travelling well, as opposed to merely travelling often, requires curiosity and a willingness to feel uncomfortable. It means getting lost in unfamiliar streets, struggling with a menu in a foreign language and talking to people whose views differ sharply from our own. Such experiences, though rarely glamorous, are precisely the ones that broaden the mind.

There is also the question of responsibility. Popular destinations such as Venice have suffered from overtourism, with crowds driving up prices and pushing local residents out. A thoughtful traveller considers not only what a place can offer them, but also what their visit costs the people who live there.

Looking back, I realise that my most valuable trip was also the least comfortable one. Had our train not broken down near a small village in the Urals, we would never have spent an evening drinking tea with a local family, and I would have missed the conversation I still remember best.
