B1: Russia: a Country of Contrasts

Russia covers more than 17 million square kilometres, which makes it the largest country on the planet. It stretches from the Baltic Sea in the west to the Pacific Ocean in the east. If you travel across the country on the Trans-Siberian Railway, the journey from Moscow to Vladivostok takes about a week.

Because the country is so huge, its climate and nature change dramatically from region to region. In the north there is the tundra, where the ground stays frozen for most of the year. Further south lies the taiga, an enormous forest of pines, firs and birches. In the far south you can swim in the warm Black Sea.

Russia has given the world many famous people. Alexander Pushkin and Leo Tolstoy are read all over the world, Pyotr Tchaikovsky wrote the music for the ballets Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, and in 1961 Yuri Gagarin became the first person to fly into space.

Russian people are known for their hospitality: guests are often welcomed with tea and homemade pies. Traditional dishes include borscht, pelmeni and bliny.

I have travelled to several Russian cities, but I have never been to the Far East. If I save enough money, I will go to Kamchatka to see its volcanoes.

B2: Understanding Russia

Spanning eleven time zones and two continents, Russia is a country whose sheer size is hard to grasp. Its territory is even slightly larger than the surface area of Pluto, a fact that tends to surprise people when they first hear it.

The country's history goes back more than a thousand years. Over the centuries it has been shaped by the princes of Kievan Rus, by Peter the Great, who opened a 'window to Europe' by founding Saint Petersburg in 1703, and by the dramatic upheavals of the twentieth century. Each of these periods has left its mark on the architecture, the language and the traditions that visitors can still observe today.

Russia is also remarkably diverse. Well over a hundred peoples live within its borders, and although Russian is the state language, many republics have official languages of their own. A traveller who visited Kazan, Grozny and Yakutsk in a single month would hardly believe they had stayed in the same country.

The country possesses vast natural resources, from oil and gas to timber and fresh water: Lake Baikal alone holds about a fifth of the world's unfrozen fresh surface water. Protecting this heritage is one of the main challenges for future generations, since industrial development can easily come at the expense of fragile ecosystems.

In my view, the best way to understand Russia is not to read about it but to travel around it. Had I not spent a summer in the Altai Mountains, I would never have realised how much the country has to offer beyond its famous capitals.
