This is the flag of Russia. It has got three stripes.

The stripes are white, blue and red. The white stripe is at the top. The blue stripe is in the middle. The red stripe is at the bottom.

The Russian flag is very old. It is more than three hundred years old.

You can see the flag on buildings and ships. People like waving flags at sports games.

Flag Day in Russia is on the twenty-second of August. On this day there are concerts in many cities.

On the twenty-second of August Russia celebrates National Flag Day. It is not a day off, but there are a lot of events in parks and squares.

Last year my class took part in a celebration in our town. We were wearing white, blue and red T-shirts, and together we made a living flag in the main square. A photographer took a picture of us from the roof of a tall building.

Then we listened to a short talk about the history of the flag. I learnt that the tricolour first appeared more than three hundred years ago, at the time of Peter the Great.

In the evening there was a concert, and the stage was decorated with hundreds of small flags.

Next year I am going to help with the celebration again, because it was one of the most exciting days of my summer.

The national flag of Russia consists of three horizontal stripes of equal size: white at the top, blue in the middle and red at the bottom. Flags with three stripes of different colours are known as tricolours.

The history of the white, blue and red flag goes back to the late seventeenth century, when it was used on Russian ships. Peter the Great, who founded the Russian navy, made it the flag of merchant ships, and over time it became a symbol of the whole country. In the twentieth century a different flag was used for many years, but in 1991 the tricolour was restored as the national flag.

There is no official explanation of what the colours mean. However, there are several popular interpretations. According to one of them, white stands for peace and purity, blue for faith and loyalty, and red for courage and strength.

Since 1994, the twenty-second of August has been celebrated as National Flag Day. On this day flags are raised, and concerts, bike rides and quizzes are held all over the country.

I had never thought much about the flag until I prepared a school project about it. If you are interested in history, you will find this topic surprisingly exciting.

At first glance, a flag is nothing more than a piece of coloured cloth. Yet few objects are capable of provoking such strong emotions. When an athlete stands on the podium and the national flag is slowly raised, even spectators who rarely think about such things may feel a lump in their throat. Why should three simple stripes matter so much?

Part of the answer lies in history. The Russian tricolour has existed for more than three centuries, having first appeared on ships in the time of Peter the Great. It disappeared for decades and then returned in 1991. A symbol with such a long story inevitably carries the memories of many generations.

Another part lies in the simplicity of the design. Because the colours have no official meaning, each person is free to see in them whatever they value most, whether it is peace, faith, courage or simply the colours of a childhood summer. A symbol that is open to interpretation can unite people precisely because it does not impose a single message.

That said, a symbol is only as meaningful as the way it is treated. A flag left fading on a forgotten building, or printed on cheap disposable goods, gradually loses its dignity. This is why many countries have rules about how flags should be displayed and replaced.

Personally, I believe that respect for a flag cannot be created by rules alone. Had my grandfather not told me how proud he felt when he saw it raised at an international competition, I would probably regard it as just another decoration. It is through such personal stories that symbols stay alive.
