A2: A Walk around My City

I live in a medium-sized city on the Volga. It isn't as famous as Moscow or Saint Petersburg, but I think it is one of the most comfortable places in Russia.

My favourite part of the city is the embankment. It is longer and wider than the main street, and in the evenings it is full of people. Teenagers ride scooters there, old couples walk slowly and street musicians play the guitar.

Last month a new sports centre opened near my school. It has got a swimming pool and a climbing wall. I went there with my classmates on the first day, and it was really great.

Of course, my city has some problems too. There are traffic jams in the morning, and some old buildings need repairs.

Right now the city is building a new bridge across the river. When it is ready, people are going to get to the other bank much faster.

B1: The Story of an Ordinary Town

Travellers who drive through my home town usually don't stop. It has no famous cathedral or palace, only a few streets of wooden houses, a market square and a factory chimney that you can see from almost anywhere. Still, I have discovered that even an ordinary town has a story worth telling.

The town was founded in the eighteenth century as a small trading settlement on the road between two big cities. Merchants who travelled with goods often stopped here for the night, which is why the oldest building in the centre is a former inn. Today it houses the local history museum, where you can see old coins, tools and photographs.

In the twentieth century a textile factory was built, and the town grew quickly. Many families, including my grandparents, came here to work. Although the factory has become much smaller since then, it is still an important part of local life.

Over the last ten years the town has changed a lot. A new park has been created by the river, and several old houses have been carefully restored.

I am proud of my town, even though it is not on any tourist map. If you ever come here, I will show you the places that only locals know.

B2: Big City or Small Town?

Almost every teenager in a small Russian town has, at some point, dreamt of escaping to a big city. I was no exception. For years I imagined that real life was happening somewhere else, in places with metro lines, concert halls and endless choice. Only after spending a summer with my aunt in a city of several million people did I begin to see my home town more fairly.

There is no denying that large cities offer opportunities that small towns cannot match. Universities, specialised hospitals and a wide range of jobs are concentrated there, and anyone with an unusual hobby is far more likely to find like-minded people. Had I wanted to study film-making, for example, I would have had to leave anyway.

Yet the city also showed me its costs. Commuting took my aunt nearly two hours a day, the noise never fully stopped, and despite living among so many people, she hardly knew her neighbours. Back home, by contrast, it takes me ten minutes to walk anywhere, and a trip to the shop inevitably turns into three conversations.

What surprised me most was realising that the quality of life depends less on size than on how a place is run and how involved its residents are. Some small towns are slowly emptying, while others, thanks to active local communities, are attracting young families with parks, festivals and remote jobs.

In my opinion, the question is not which is better in general, but which suits a particular person at a particular stage of life. I will probably move to a big city to study, but I no longer think of it as an escape. If I return one day, it will be a choice, not a defeat.
