A2: A Day at the Hermitage

Last autumn our class went to Saint Petersburg, and on the second day we visited the Hermitage. It is one of the largest museums in the world.

First we saw the Winter Palace. It was the home of the Russian tsars, and it looks like a giant green and white cake. Inside, the halls were bigger and brighter than I expected. There was gold everywhere!

Our guide showed us paintings by Leonardo da Vinci and Rembrandt. My favourite thing was the Peacock Clock. It is a golden peacock which opens its tail when the clock works.

After four hours my legs were tired, but I didn't want to leave. The guide said that you need years to see everything.

Next summer I am going to come back with my parents because I want to see the rooms we missed.

B1: The History of the Hermitage

The Hermitage is one of the oldest and largest museums in the world. Its history began in 1764, when Empress Catherine the Great bought a collection of more than two hundred paintings from a merchant in Berlin. This year is considered the date when the museum was founded.

At first the collection was private. Catherine kept the pictures in a quiet wing of her palace, which she called her 'hermitage', a French word for a place where a person can be alone. Only the empress and her guests were allowed to see them.

Today the museum occupies several buildings, and the most famous of them is the Winter Palace. It was designed by the architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli and was used as the main residence of the Russian emperors. The museum was opened to the public in 1852.

The collection has grown enormously and now contains more than three million objects, from Egyptian mummies to works by Matisse and Picasso. However, only a small part of them can be shown at the same time.

I have visited the Hermitage twice, and I still have not seen half of it. If you go there, plan your route in advance, or you will get lost in its endless halls.

B2: More Than a Museum

It is tempting to think of the Hermitage simply as a vast storehouse of masterpieces. Yet to wander through its halls is to walk through more than two and a half centuries of Russian history, since the building itself tells a story as compelling as any painting on its walls.

Founded in 1764 as Catherine the Great's private collection, the museum reflects the ambitions of an empress determined to prove that Russia could rival the great courts of Europe. Buying entire collections from aristocrats and foreign dealers, she assembled in a few decades what other monarchs had taken centuries to acquire.

Perhaps the most remarkable chapter in its history, though, came during the Second World War. Before the siege of Leningrad began, the staff packed more than a million objects into crates and sent them to the Urals. Those who remained lived in the basements, guarding the empty frames. According to a well-known story, one of them even gave a tour of the bare halls to a group of soldiers, describing from memory the paintings that had once hung there.

Had the museum's workers not shown such dedication, much of the collection might have been lost forever. Their story reminds us that cultural heritage does not survive by itself; it depends on people willing to protect it, sometimes at great personal cost.

This is why I believe that a visit to the Hermitage should not be rushed. Rather than trying to see every masterpiece in a single day, a visitor would do better to choose a few halls and look closely. Only then does one begin to appreciate that the museum is not merely a collection of objects but a monument to human devotion.
