A2: A Summer on the Golden Ring
Last July my parents and I travelled around the Golden Ring. It is a route through old towns to the north-east of Moscow. We went by car and visited six towns in eight days.
Our first stop was Sergiev Posad. Its monastery has blue domes with golden stars, and it was the most beautiful building of the whole trip. In Vladimir we saw the white Golden Gate, which is more than eight hundred years old.
Suzdal was my favourite town. It is smaller and quieter than the others, and there are wooden houses, churches and green meadows everywhere. We stayed in a guesthouse and drank honey drinks called medovukha.
In Yaroslavl we walked along the Volga, and in Rostov Veliky we listened to the famous church bells.
I was tired at the end, but I learnt a lot about Russian history. Next summer we are going to visit Kizhi.

B1: Five Places Every Traveller Should See
Russia is so large that no one can see all of its sights in a lifetime. However, there are a few places which almost every guidebook recommends, and I have been lucky enough to visit most of them.
In Saint Petersburg, the Hermitage occupies the Winter Palace, where Russian emperors once lived. The museum was founded by Catherine the Great in 1764, and today its collection includes works by Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt and Picasso. Not far from the city lies Peterhof, which is often called the Russian Versailles. Its fountains work without any pumps, because the water flows down naturally from higher ground.
Further north, on an island in Lake Onega, stands Kizhi. Its Church of the Transfiguration, which has twenty-two wooden domes, was built in 1714. According to a popular legend, the builders did not use a single nail.
Lake Baikal, in Siberia, is the oldest and deepest lake on Earth. Although it is cold even in summer, thousands of tourists come every year to walk on its clear ice in winter or hike along its shores.
Of all these places, Kizhi impressed me most. If you are interested in wooden architecture, you will not find anything like it anywhere else.

B2: Seeing Sights or Seeing Places?
Ask a foreigner to name a Russian landmark and they will almost certainly mention the Kremlin or Saint Basil's Cathedral. Ask a Russian traveller, and the answer may well be a remote lake, a monastery in the north or a village nobody abroad has heard of. The gap between these two lists says a great deal about how we experience a country.
Iconic sights deserve their fame. Standing in the Hermitage's Jordan Staircase or watching the Grand Cascade at Peterhof burst into life, it is impossible not to be impressed by the ambition of those who built them. Yet such places are, by their very nature, crowded. Shuffling through a palace among thousands of other visitors, one sees the exhibits but seldom feels anything.
This is why I have come to value quieter destinations just as highly. On my visit to Kizhi, I stayed until the last boat had left, and for an hour the island belonged to a handful of people, the wind and the silver domes of the wooden church. Had I come only for a quick photograph, I would have missed the most memorable part of the trip.
Tourism, of course, creates its own dilemmas. Visitors bring money to small communities and help pay for restoration, but they also wear down fragile monuments and natural sites. The shores of Lake Baikal, for instance, suffer from litter in places where crowds gather, while unprotected wooden churches in remote villages are slowly decaying for lack of attention.
Perhaps, then, the most responsible way to travel is also the most rewarding one: to spread our visits more widely, to slow down, and to treat every sight not as a box to tick but as a place where people have lived and worked for centuries.
