There are four seasons: winter, spring, summer and autumn. The weather is different in every season.

In winter it is cold and snowy. We can ski, skate and make a snowman.

In spring it is warm and sunny. The snow melts and the birds sing.

In summer it is hot. I like swimming in the river. Sometimes it rains.

In autumn it is cool and windy. The leaves are red and yellow. It often rains, so I take my umbrella.

Today it is sunny. I like sunny days!

A2: A Rainy Day

Last Saturday my friends and I wanted to have a picnic in the park. The weather forecast said it was going to be sunny and warm, so we prepared sandwiches, fruit and lemonade.

In the morning the sky was blue, and we started our picnic at eleven. But an hour later dark clouds appeared. The wind became stronger, and suddenly it started to rain heavily.

We ran to a small café near the park. We were wet and cold, but we were laughing. While we were drinking hot chocolate, we watched the rain through the window.

In the afternoon the rain stopped and we saw a beautiful rainbow. It was the brightest rainbow of the summer.

Next weekend we are going to try again. But this time I am going to take an umbrella!

B1: Weather and Climate in Russia

People often confuse weather and climate, although they are not the same thing. Weather is what happens in the sky today or this week, while climate is the typical weather of a place over many years.

Russia is so large that its climate varies enormously. Most of the country has a continental climate, which means that winters are long and cold and summers are short but warm. In Yakutia, temperatures can fall below minus fifty in January, but on the Black Sea coast, in Sochi, palm trees grow and it rarely snows.

Many people in Russia check the forecast every morning, and there are lots of folk sayings about the weather. In spring the weather is often unpredictable: it can be sunny in the morning, and by the evening it may be snowing again.

Scientists say that the climate of the planet is getting warmer. Winters in many regions have become milder, and extreme weather, such as heat waves and floods, is reported more often than before.

I have always preferred winter to summer, because I love skiing. If it snows this weekend, I will go to the forest with my friends.

B2: Why Do We Talk About the Weather?

There is a well-known joke that whenever two English people meet, their first topic of conversation will be the weather. Like most stereotypes, it is an exaggeration, but it contains a grain of truth, and not only about the English. In almost every culture, the weather serves as a safe, neutral subject with which to start a conversation.

Its usefulness lies precisely in its neutrality. Unlike politics or money, the weather affects everyone equally and belongs to no one, so commenting on it carries no risk of offending a stranger. A remark such as 'Lovely day, isn't it?' is not really a request for information; it is a friendly signal that the speaker is open to talking.

Yet the weather is far more than small talk. For farmers, sailors and pilots, an accurate forecast can make the difference between success and disaster. Modern forecasting, based on satellite data and powerful computers, has become remarkably reliable for a few days ahead, although it still struggles to predict the weather weeks in advance.

Climate change has given the subject a new seriousness. Heat waves, droughts and floods that were once considered rare are now discussed far more often, and conversations that used to begin with a casual comment about the rain may end in a debate about the future of the planet.

Personally, I have learnt to appreciate every kind of weather. Had I not spent a rainy week in Scotland, I would never have understood that grey skies can be beautiful too, provided you are dressed for them.
