A2: Shopping With Grandma
Last Saturday I went shopping with my grandmother. I needed new clothes for my cousin's wedding, but I didn't know what to buy.
First we went to a big shopping centre. The dresses there were very bright and very expensive. Then Grandma took me to a small shop near the market. The clothes were simpler, but they were better quality.
Grandma told me about fashion when she was young. In the 1970s girls wore long skirts and very wide trousers. She showed me some photos, and I laughed because some of those clothes are popular again now!
In the end I chose a dark green dress and white trainers. Grandma said it was the most stylish outfit in the shop.
The wedding is next month, and I am going to wear Grandma's old silver necklace with my new dress.

B1: How Fashion Changes
Fashion is not only about clothes. It reflects the way people live, think and work. Clothes can show which group we belong to, how we feel and even what we believe in. That is why styles have changed so dramatically over the last hundred years.
In the 1920s women started wearing shorter dresses and cut their hair short, which was a sign of new freedom. Jeans, which were first made as work clothes for miners and farmers, became fashionable among young people in the 1950s. Later, trainers moved from sports grounds to city streets.
Today fashion changes faster than ever before. New collections appear in shops every few weeks, and many people buy clothes they wear only once or twice. This is called 'fast fashion'. Although it is cheap and convenient, it produces a huge amount of waste.
However, more and more young people are trying to shop in a different way. They buy second-hand clothes, swap things with friends or repair what they already have.
I have never been a big fan of shopping, but recently I have found a vintage shop where I bought a brilliant denim jacket. If you look after your clothes, they will last for years.

B2: Is Fashion Worth Taking Seriously?
Fashion is often dismissed as a trivial pursuit, the preoccupation of people with too much time and money on their hands. Yet such a view overlooks the fact that clothing is one of the most direct ways in which we communicate with others, long before we have uttered a single word.
Whether we like it or not, what we wear sends signals about our age, profession, values and even our mood. A teenager experimenting with an unusual hairstyle and a businessman in a tailored suit are, in their own ways, both making statements. Seen from this angle, fashion is less about vanity than about identity.
Nevertheless, the industry deserves criticism. The rise of fast fashion has encouraged a culture of constant consumption, in which garments are bought on impulse and thrown away after a handful of wears. Producing them requires enormous quantities of water and energy, and much of the work is done by poorly paid workers in difficult conditions.
Were consumers to buy fewer but better-made clothes, the pressure on both the environment and the workers would ease considerably. Some encouraging trends have already emerged: second-hand shopping has become fashionable rather than embarrassing, and repairing clothes is increasingly seen as a skill rather than a sign of poverty.
Personally, I believe that taking fashion seriously means neither following every trend nor rejecting style altogether. It means developing a sense of what genuinely suits you and choosing pieces you will want to wear for years. Had I understood this earlier, I would have saved a great deal of money on clothes I never wore.
