A2: A Day at My School
I am in the seventh form at School No. 12 in Tver. My school is not the biggest in the city, but it is one of the friendliest.
Yesterday was a typical Tuesday. First we had maths, and we wrote a short test. Then we had history, which is my favourite subject, because our teacher tells interesting stories about the past. After the third lesson we went to the canteen and had porridge and tea.
In the afternoon we had biology in the new laboratory. We looked at leaves under a microscope. It was more interesting than reading the textbook.
After lessons I usually stay at school for the drama club. At the moment we are preparing a play for New Year, and I am playing a funny king.
I get a lot of homework, but I don't mind, because my school days are never boring.

B1: More Than Just Lessons
When people talk about school, they usually think of lessons, marks and exams. However, I have studied at the same school in Chelyabinsk for nine years, and some of my best memories have nothing to do with the timetable.
Every year starts on the first of September, which is called the Day of Knowledge. Younger pupils come with huge bouquets of flowers, and a first-former is often carried around the schoolyard on an older student's shoulders, ringing a small bell. I remember how nervous I was when it was my turn to ring it.
Our school is famous in the city for its science projects. In the eighth form, my friend and I built a small weather station, which is still used by the geography teacher. Although it was hard work, it taught us more than any textbook.
Of course, school life has its difficulties too. There is a lot of pressure before the final exams, and I have spent many evenings revising instead of meeting friends.
In two years I will leave school. If someone asks me what I will miss most, I will say: the people, the projects and the noisy corridors between lessons.

B2: What Should School Be For?
Having spent almost eleven years at school, I find it strange that we so rarely ask what school is actually for. Is its purpose to pass on knowledge, to prepare us for exams, to turn us into responsible citizens, or simply to keep us busy while our parents are at work? The answer, I suspect, shapes almost everything that happens in a classroom.
For a long time the main goal seemed obvious: to fill pupils' heads with facts. In a world without the internet, that made sense, since a teacher was often the only reliable source of information. Today, however, any fact can be found in seconds. Memorising the dates of battles or the capitals of distant countries is no longer as valuable as knowing how to check a source, compare opinions and spot a convincing lie.
This does not mean that knowledge has become unimportant. On the contrary, one cannot think critically about history without knowing any history. But the balance, in my view, should shift towards skills: writing clearly, arguing politely, working in a team and managing one's own time. Had I been taught how to plan a long project in the seventh form, I would have saved myself many sleepless nights before deadlines.
There is also the question of motivation. Most of my classmates are not lazy; they are simply exhausted by preparing for tests that measure what is easy to measure rather than what matters. A school that left more room for curiosity, through projects, debates or even well-chosen failures, would probably produce students who keep learning long after graduation.
Ultimately, I believe that a good school should make itself gradually unnecessary. Its greatest achievement is not a high exam score but a person who no longer needs to be told what to learn next.
