A2: Easter at My Grandmother's

My name is Dasha. Every year my family celebrates Easter at my grandmother's house in a small town near Yaroslavl. Easter is the most important spring holiday for her.

This year we arrived on Saturday morning. Grandma was baking kulich, and the whole house smelled of vanilla and raisins. My little brother and I painted eggs with onion skins, so they became dark red. It was great fun.

On Sunday morning people greeted each other with the words 'Christ is risen!', and the answer was 'He is risen indeed!'. Then we had a big breakfast and played egg tapping. My egg was the strongest, and I won three times!

My English friend Emily told me about Easter in Britain. Children there get chocolate eggs and look for them in the garden. Next year I am going to organise an Easter egg hunt for my cousins.

B1: Easter Traditions in Russia and Britain

Easter is one of the oldest Christian holidays, and it is celebrated in many countries around the world. Its date is not fixed: it depends on the moon and changes every year. In Russia, Orthodox Easter often falls later than the Easter which is celebrated in Britain, although sometimes the two dates coincide.

In Russia, preparations usually begin several days before the holiday. People clean their homes, bake kulich, a tall sweet bread decorated with icing, and make paskha, a pyramid-shaped dessert from cottage cheese. Eggs are dyed in bright colours, and many families still use onion skins, which give them a deep red-brown shade.

In Britain, Easter has become a favourite holiday for children. Chocolate eggs are sold in every supermarket, and many families organise an Easter egg hunt, where children search the garden for hidden sweets. People also eat hot cross buns, spiced buns with a cross on top.

Although the traditions are different, they have a lot in common. In both countries the egg is a symbol of new life, and the holiday is a time when families get together after the long winter.

I have tried both kulich and hot cross buns, and I have to say I like them equally. If I visit London in spring, I will definitely take part in an egg hunt.

B2: What Easter Means Today

Few holidays combine the religious and the everyday as naturally as Easter. For believers, it is the most important celebration of the Christian year, marking the resurrection of Christ. Yet even for people who rarely go to church, Easter has come to stand for something broader: the arrival of spring, the renewal of nature and the value of family ties.

The symbols of the holiday are remarkably similar across cultures. The egg, which appears lifeless but contains a new life, has represented rebirth since ancient times. In Russia, dyed eggs are exchanged with the traditional Easter greeting, while in Britain they have largely been replaced by chocolate ones wrapped in brightly coloured foil.

Food plays an equally central role. Having fasted for weeks, many Orthodox families break the fast on Easter Sunday with kulich, paskha and eggs blessed in church the night before. British tables, by contrast, are more likely to feature roast lamb and simnel cake, a fruit cake topped with marzipan.

Some people complain that Easter has become too commercial, pointing to supermarket shelves filled with chocolate bunnies weeks in advance. There is some truth in this criticism. However, I would argue that commercial traditions do not necessarily destroy the meaning of a holiday; they simply add another layer to it.

Personally, I find the quieter side of Easter the most appealing. Had my grandmother not taught me to dye eggs with onion skins, I would probably see the holiday as just another long weekend. Instead, it reminds me that traditions survive only when one generation takes the time to pass them on to the next.
