A2: My Great-Grandfather's Photo

My name is Artyom and I live in Tula. Victory Day is a special holiday for my family, because my great-grandfather Ivan fought in the war. He was only nineteen when he went to the front.

I never met him, but we have his old photo and his letters. My grandmother often tells me stories about him. He was brave and kind, and he loved music.

Last year we took part in the Immortal Regiment. Thousands of people walked through the centre of our city with photos of their relatives. I carried the photo of my great-grandfather. It was one of the most moving days of my life.

After the march we laid flowers at the war memorial and listened to old war songs. In the evening we watched the fireworks from our balcony.

Next year I am going to write a short story about Ivan for my school project.

B1: Victory Day: a Day of Memory

Victory Day is celebrated in Russia on 9 May. It marks the end of the Great Patriotic War, which lasted from 1941 to 1945 and touched almost every family in the country. Millions of soldiers and civilians lost their lives, so the holiday is first of all a day of remembrance.

The day usually begins with a military parade on Red Square in Moscow, and parades are also held in many other cities. Later, people come to war memorials and to the Tombs of the Unknown Soldier to lay flowers. In the evening the whole country observes a minute of silence.

One of the best-known traditions of the day is the Immortal Regiment. People march through the streets holding portraits of relatives who fought in the war or worked on the home front. The idea is simple, but it has touched many hearts.

Veterans are the most honoured guests on this day. Although very few of them are still alive, schoolchildren visit them, bring flowers and listen to their memories. Their stories are often recorded, so that future generations can hear them too.

I have heard many stories about the war from my grandparents. If I have children one day, I will pass these stories on to them.

B2: Why We Remember

More than three quarters of a century have passed since 1945, yet Victory Day remains one of the most deeply felt holidays in Russia. Unlike many other public holidays, it is not really about celebration in the usual sense. It is, above all, a day on which people pause to remember the enormous price that was paid for peace.

Hardly a family in the country was left untouched by the war. Grandparents and great-grandparents fought at the front, worked in factories for sixteen hours a day or survived the siege of Leningrad, which lasted almost 900 days. Their experience, passed down through letters, medals and faded photographs, forms a private history that exists alongside the official one.

As the generation of veterans has almost passed away, the question of how to keep their memory alive has become more urgent. Traditions such as the Immortal Regiment, in which people carry portraits of their relatives, shift the focus from grand events to individual lives. Seeing thousands of faces, each with a name and a story, makes the scale of the loss far easier to grasp than any statistics.

Some argue that remembrance should be quiet and personal rather than public. I understand this point of view, but I believe the two forms complement each other: shared rituals give people a sense of belonging, while family stories give those rituals real meaning.

Had my great-grandmother not kept a diary during the war, I would know her only as a name on a family tree. Reading it, I realised that remembering is not a duty imposed from outside, but a way of thanking people who never had the chance to tell their whole story.
