A2: My First Music Festival

Last July my cousin Kostya invited me to a music festival outside the city. I was fourteen, and it was my first time at a real open-air festival.

We travelled there by train and then walked across a field with hundreds of other people. There were three stages, and the main one was bigger than our school.

On the first day it rained all afternoon. Our shoes were wet and muddy, but nobody cared. When my favourite band came on stage, everyone was singing and jumping, and I forgot about the rain.

In the evening we sat by a campfire and talked to some students from another city. It was the most exciting weekend of the summer.

This year I am working in a café on Saturdays because I want to pay for my own ticket. Next summer I am going to take my best friend with me.

B1: Festivals Around the World

People have celebrated festivals for thousands of years. In the past, most of them were connected with the seasons, the harvest or religion. Today there are also festivals of music, film, theatre, food and even science, which attract millions of visitors every year.

One of the most famous is the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland, which has been held every August since 1947. Anyone can take part, so the city is filled with thousands of shows, from serious plays to comedy performed in tiny cafés and on the streets.

Glastonbury in England, which started in 1970, is one of the biggest music festivals in the world. In India and many other countries, people celebrate Holi, the spring festival of colours, by throwing bright powder at each other. In Russia, Maslenitsa is celebrated at the end of winter with pancakes, games and the burning of a straw figure.

Big festivals can be expensive and crowded. However, they give people a chance to see their favourite artists, meet others with the same interests and try something completely new.

I have been to a few festivals in my region, but I have never seen the Fringe. If I study English well, I will go to Edinburgh one day and watch shows from morning till night.

B2: Why We Need Festivals

At first sight, festivals might seem like an odd way to spend time and money. Thousands of people travel long distances, queue for hours, sleep in damp tents and pay considerable sums for a chance to stand in a crowd. Yet every summer the tickets sell out, which suggests that festivals satisfy a need that ordinary entertainment does not.

Part of their appeal lies in the sense of community they create. In everyday life most of us move within small circles of family, classmates or colleagues. At a festival, by contrast, strangers sing the same songs, share food and help each other put up tents. For a few days, social barriers seem to dissolve, and people feel part of something larger than themselves.

Festivals also offer a temporary escape from routine. Traditional celebrations such as Maslenitsa or the European carnivals once allowed people to turn the normal order of things upside down before returning to work and duty. Modern festivals play a similar role: rarely do we allow ourselves to dance in the rain or stay up until sunrise, but at a festival such behaviour feels perfectly natural.

Critics point out, quite rightly, that large events can damage the environment and that rising ticket prices make them inaccessible to many young people. These concerns should not be dismissed, and organisers increasingly try to address them with recycling schemes and cheaper local events.

Having attended several festivals myself, I believe their value far outweighs their drawbacks. Had I spent those weekends at home, I would have missed not only great music but also conversations that changed the way I see the world.
