A2: Pancake Week in Our Town

Every year at the end of winter our town celebrates Maslenitsa. It is a happy holiday, because everybody is waiting for spring.

This year my friends and I went to the main square on Sunday. It was full of people. Some were wearing bright traditional costumes, and musicians were playing folk songs.

We tried pancakes with jam, caviar and condensed milk. The ones with condensed milk were the tastiest! Then my dad tried to climb a tall wooden pole. He didn't reach the top, but everybody clapped.

In the evening people burnt a big straw doll, and we watched the fire.

The last day of Maslenitsa is Forgiveness Sunday, when people say sorry to each other. I said sorry to my sister, because I often take her headphones without asking.

B1: Saying Goodbye to Winter

Maslenitsa is one of the oldest holidays in Russia. It goes back to pagan times, when people celebrated the end of winter and welcomed the sun. Later it became connected with the Orthodox calendar: it is held in the week before Lent, so its dates change every year.

The main symbol of the holiday is the pancake, which is said to represent the sun because it is round, golden and warm. Pancakes are eaten every day of the week with butter, sour cream, honey or caviar. Traditionally, each day had its own meaning: on one of them, for example, sons-in-law visited their mothers-in-law to eat pancakes.

During Maslenitsa people enjoy outdoor activities which have been popular for centuries, such as sledging, snowball fights and rides in horse-drawn sleighs. At the end of the week, a straw figure is burnt as a symbol of the end of winter.

The last day is called Forgiveness Sunday. People ask their family and friends to forgive them for anything bad they have done.

Last year I cooked pancakes myself for the first time. As the Russian saying goes, the first pancake is always a lump, and mine certainly was. However, the rest were delicious.

B2: Why an Ancient Festival Survives

In a world of smartphones and supermarkets, it might seem strange that so many people still gather each year to burn a straw figure and eat stacks of pancakes. Yet Maslenitsa, a festival whose roots stretch back to pre-Christian times, shows no sign of disappearing. If anything, it has become more visible in recent decades, with city squares turning into open-air fairs.

Part of its appeal undoubtedly lies in its timing. By late winter, most people are weary of short days and grey skies, and a celebration that openly bids farewell to the cold answers a genuine emotional need. The burning of the effigy, however theatrical, offers a kind of collective release. It is no coincidence that the whole week is so full of noise, colour and laughter.

Equally important is the festival's remarkable flexibility. Over the centuries it has absorbed pagan sun worship, Orthodox preparation for Lent and, more recently, commercial street fairs, without losing its essential character. Few traditions could survive such transformations; Maslenitsa seems to thrive on them.

The custom I find most meaningful, though, is Forgiveness Sunday. Asking for forgiveness, even half-jokingly, forces people to acknowledge small offences that would otherwise be left to grow. Were this ritual practised more often throughout the year, many quarrels might never begin.

Some critics argue that modern Maslenitsa has become little more than a marketing opportunity. While I understand their concern, I believe that a tradition does not have to remain unchanged to be authentic. As long as families still gather in the kitchen, arguing about the perfect pancake recipe, the spirit of the holiday is very much alive.
