A2: Autumn at My Grandparents' House

Every year in early September I visit my grandparents in the village. Autumn is the busiest time there, because there is a lot of work in the garden.

This year I helped Grandad pick potatoes. It was hard work, but it was more fun than I expected. Grandma made apple pies, and the whole house smelt wonderful.

One weekend we went to the forest to look for mushrooms. Grandad knows the forest better than anyone, and he showed me which mushrooms are safe. We came back with two full baskets!

The weather was warm and sunny for a few days. Grandma said it was 'Indian summer'. But then it got colder, and the rain started.

Now I am sitting at home and looking at the photos from the village. I miss my grandparents already. In October we are going to visit them again.

B1: Two Kinds of Autumn

People who say that autumn is a sad season have probably only seen it in November. In fact, there are two very different autumns in Russia, and I have learnt to love both of them.

The first one is golden autumn, which usually lasts from mid-September to early October. The birches turn bright yellow, the maples go red, and on a sunny day the forest looks as if it has been painted. This is the time which Russian poets and painters have admired for centuries; Isaac Levitan even called one of his most famous paintings 'Golden Autumn'.

The second autumn is much darker. In late October the leaves fall, the days become shorter and the sky is grey for weeks. Although many people feel tired at this time of year, I have found a few ways to cope. I go for walks during the lunch break, when it is still light, and I make sure I spend time with friends instead of staying alone with my phone.

Autumn is also a season of new beginnings. The school year starts, clubs and sports sections open again, and it is a good moment to try something new. This year I have joined a photography club.

If the weather is fine this weekend, I will take my camera to the park and try to catch the last bright colours before winter arrives.

B2: In Praise of Autumn

In most cultures spring is associated with youth and hope, while autumn stands for decline and the approach of old age. It is hardly surprising, then, that many people greet the first yellow leaves with a touch of sadness. Yet I have always felt that this view does autumn an injustice.

Russian literature offers a striking counterexample. Pushkin, who confessed that he disliked spring, considered autumn the season in which he worked best, and some of his finest writing was produced during an autumn spent in the village of Boldino. For him, the cool, clear air and the 'lavish fading of nature' were not depressing but inspiring.

There is something to be learnt from this attitude. Autumn is, above all, a season of harvest, when the results of months of effort are finally gathered in. Seen from this angle, it is a time not of loss but of reward. Even the bare trees of November, stripped of their leaves, are simply preparing to survive the winter and grow again.

That is not to deny the real difficulties the season brings. Shorter days genuinely affect people's mood and energy, and doctors increasingly recognise seasonal low mood as a common problem. Rather than ignoring it, it makes sense to adapt: to get as much daylight as possible, to keep active and to plan small pleasures for the darkest weeks.

Had I grown up somewhere without real seasons, I suspect I would have missed one of life's quieter lessons. Autumn teaches us that endings can be beautiful, and that letting go is often a necessary step towards something new.
