A2: How We Found Barsik
Two years ago, on a cold November evening, my sister and I were walking home from school. Suddenly we heard a quiet sound under a car. It was a tiny black kitten!
He was wet and hungry, so we took him home. Mum wasn't happy at first, but when she saw the kitten, she smiled. We called him Barsik.
Now Barsik is the biggest and laziest cat in our street. He sleeps for about fifteen hours a day and wakes up only when someone opens the fridge.
He is also very clever. When I am doing my homework, he always sits on my notebook because he wants attention.
Next week we are going to take him to the vet for a check-up. Barsik hates the car, but he is the best pet in the world.

B1: Amazing Facts About Cats
Cats have lived next to people for about ten thousand years. Scientists believe that they were first tamed in the Middle East, where farmers needed animals which could protect their grain from mice. In ancient Egypt cats were so respected that killing one was a serious crime.
A cat's body is perfectly designed for hunting. Cats can see well in very dim light, and their hearing is much better than ours. Their whiskers help them to feel the space around them, so they can move through narrow gaps in the dark.
Although cats are often called independent, they communicate with people a lot. Interestingly, adult cats rarely meow to each other: they use this sound mainly to talk to humans. A slow blink from a cat is considered a sign of trust.
Cats sleep between twelve and sixteen hours a day, but that does not mean they are lazy. In the wild, they save energy for short and intense hunts.
I have had my cat Sima for five years, and I have noticed that she always knows when I am sad. If you have never lived with a cat, you will be surprised how much love such a small animal can give.

B2: In Defence of Cats
The debate between cat lovers and dog lovers is probably as old as pet ownership itself. Dogs are praised for their loyalty and obedience, whereas cats are frequently dismissed as cold, selfish creatures that tolerate their owners only because they are fed. In my view, this reputation is deeply unfair.
What people interpret as indifference is, in fact, a different kind of affection. A dog seeks approval; a cat offers companionship on its own terms. When a cat chooses to curl up on your lap, it is not obeying an order but making a deliberate decision, which arguably makes the gesture all the more meaningful.
There are practical arguments too. Cats are well suited to modern urban life: they need no daily walks, can be left alone for a working day and are content in a small flat. For elderly people or busy students, such qualities can make the difference between having a pet and having none at all.
That said, owning a cat is not without responsibility. Unwanted kittens fill animal shelters every spring, and cats allowed to roam freely kill vast numbers of birds. Had more owners neutered their pets and kept them indoors, both problems would be far less serious today.
Living with a cat has taught me patience and respect for boundaries. Rarely have I met a creature that so clearly insists on being treated as an equal. Perhaps that is the real reason some people dislike cats: they refuse to be anyone's servant, and we are not used to animals that demand to be understood rather than simply commanded.
