A2: My Favourite Superhero
When I was seven, my older brother gave me an old Spider-Man comic. I didn't understand all the words, but I loved the pictures. Since then, Spider-Man has been my favourite superhero.
I think he is more interesting than other heroes because he is an ordinary teenager. Peter Parker goes to school, does his homework and sometimes has problems with money. He is also shy, just like me.
Last year I watched an animated Spider-Man film at the cinema with my friends. It was the funniest and most colourful film I have ever seen, and we talked about it all the way home.
Right now I am drawing my own comic. My hero is a girl who can talk to birds, and she lives in my town.
For my next birthday, I am going to ask my parents for a Spider-Man costume. I know I can't climb walls, but I can still look cool!

B1: The Story of Spider-Man
Spider-Man was created by the writer Stan Lee and the artist Steve Ditko. He first appeared in 1962 in a Marvel comic called Amazing Fantasy. At that time, most teenagers in comics were only sidekicks who helped adult heroes, so a teenage superhero with his own story was something new.
Peter Parker is a quiet student from Queens, New York, who lives with his Aunt May and Uncle Ben. One day he is bitten by a spider, and he suddenly becomes incredibly strong and fast. He can climb walls and has a 'spider-sense', which warns him about danger.
At first Peter uses his powers to make money, but after Uncle Ben is killed, he realises that with great power comes great responsibility. This idea has become the most famous lesson of the whole series.
Since then, Spider-Man has appeared in thousands of comics, cartoons and video games. Several actors have played him in films, including Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland. The animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which tells the story of a young hero called Miles Morales, won an Oscar.
I have read many superhero comics, but Spider-Man is still the one I return to. If you have never read the early stories, you will be surprised how modern they feel.

B2: Why Spider-Man Still Matters
More than sixty years after his first appearance, Spider-Man remains one of the most recognisable fictional characters on the planet. His red and blue costume is instantly familiar even to people who have never opened a comic book. Given how many superheroes have come and gone since 1962, his lasting popularity deserves some explanation.
Part of the answer lies in the fact that Peter Parker was never meant to be perfect. Unlike the confident, wealthy or godlike heroes of his time, he worried about rent, homework and girlfriends, and he frequently lost. Readers saw in him not an ideal to admire but a person to recognise, and that sense of identification has proved remarkably durable.
Equally important is the moral at the heart of the story. Had Peter stopped the thief who later killed his uncle, his life would have taken a completely different course. Haunted by that single moment of selfishness, he chooses to use his gifts for others, even when doing so costs him friendships, sleep and any chance of an ordinary life. The idea that power brings obligations is hardly new, yet rarely has it been expressed so simply.
Finally, the character has proved unusually flexible. Writers and filmmakers have reinvented him again and again, and the arrival of Miles Morales showed that the mask could be worn by someone with a different background without losing what made the hero special.
In my view, Spider-Man endures because he suggests that heroism is a decision rather than a privilege. Anyone, however ordinary, can choose to act responsibly, and that is a message worth hearing at any age.
